Stoney Games Recalls Kluster Magnet Chess Games Due to Risk of Serious Injury or Death from Magnet Ingestion; Violates Mandatory Standard for Toys

Stoney Games is recalling Kluster Fun Tabletop Magnet Chess Games because the small, loose high-powered magnets can be swallowed by children. If more than one magnet is ingested, they can attract each other inside the body and cause life-threatening intestinal tears, blockages, blood poisoning, or death.

What is recalled
Kluster Fun Tabletop Magnet Chess Games, sold by Stoney Games. Each game includes about 24 small loose magnets (roughly 0.5 to 1 inch wide and 0.3 to 0.4 inches tall), an orange string, an instruction manual, and a black "Kluster"-branded storage pouch. The game was sold in either a black box labeled "Kluster" on the front, or a white pouch with gameplay instructions printed on the back.

The hazard
The recalled magnet games violate the mandatory standard for toys because they contain loose high-powered magnets that fit within CPSC's small parts cylinder, posing an ingestion hazard to children. When high-powered magnets are swallowed, the ingested magnets can attract each other, or other metal objects, and become lodged in the digestive system. This can result in perforations, twisting, and/or blockage of the intestines, blood poisoning and death.
