School Specialty Recalls Tip Restraint Kits Included in Childcraft Furniture Due to Risk of Serious Injury or Death from Tip-Over Hazard

School Specialty is recalling plastic tip restraint kits (furniture straps) included with Childcraft furniture because the plastic parts can break or degrade, removing the protection against furniture tip-overs. A tipped piece of furniture can seriously injure or kill a child, and the defect is hidden, meaning families may believe their furniture is safely anchored when it is not.

What is recalled

Plastic tip restraint kits (also called furniture straps) packaged inside boxes of Childcraft furniture sold by School Specialty. Each kit contains two white plastic brackets/mounts, a white plastic cable zip tie, two pairs of screws, and two drywall anchors. The item number for affected furniture is printed on a label on the bottom of the furniture piece. A full list of affected item numbers is available from School Specialty.

Am I affected

You are affected if you own any Childcraft furniture that came with a plastic tip restraint kit in the box. Check the label on the bottom of the furniture for the item number, then verify it against School Specialty's list of affected item numbers. The recalled kits include white plastic brackets, a white plastic cable zip tie, screws, and drywall anchors. If you installed one of these plastic kits to secure your furniture to a wall, stop relying on it now.

What to do right now

Stop using the recalled plastic tip restraints immediately and keep children away from any furniture secured with them. Contact School Specialty for a free replacement kit made of stainless steel: call toll-free 866-588-6951, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT; email compliance@schoolspecialty.com; or visit https://help.schoolspecialty.com/s/article/Childcraft-Furniture-Tip-Restraint-Kit-Recall. Once you have installed the replacement kit, throw the recalled plastic kit in the household trash. Note: School Specialty is also mailing replacement kits directly to customers who purchased Childcraft furniture through them.
